Teneriffe Walkers Report Clear Link Between Exercise and Anxiety Reduction
Programs along the riverfront show measurable drops in anxiety after consistent movement.
How we reported this

Participants in Teneriffe exercise groups tracked a 28 percent average reduction in self-reported anxiety after six weeks of regular sessions, according to records kept by the Teneriffe Active Living Initiative.
The findings arrive as residents manage added pressure from the Telstra network outage that disrupted mobile service and emergency calls on July 8. Local health workers noted a spike in stress-related inquiries at community clinics in the days that followed.
Programs on Walker Street and the River Path
The Teneriffe Active Living Initiative runs weekday morning walks that start at the community hall on Walker Street and finish along the riverside trail near Bretts Wharf. A separate evening circuit class meets at the same hall on Tuesdays and Thursdays for $15 per session. Both programs began expanded schedules in January 2026 after demand rose following the holiday period.
Residents on Florence Street and Macquarie Street have joined the walks in growing numbers, with sign-up sheets at the hall showing 112 new participants since March. The initiative logs attendance and short anxiety questionnaires at the start and end of each eight-week block.
Numbers Behind the Routine
Internal data released by the initiative in June 2026 covered 150 residents who completed at least four sessions weekly. Average anxiety scores on a standard 0-21 scale fell from 11.4 to 8.2. The same records showed participants who added one extra walk per week recorded an additional two-point drop.
Coordinators plan to open a third slot at the Walker Street hall starting August 3 to handle the waiting list. Residents can register in person or by calling the initiative office before the next block fills.
