New Family-Friendly Cycling Routes Open Across Paddington Brisbane
Marked paths along Given Terrace and through Paddington Memorial Park now cater to new riders with wide lanes and minimal traffic.
How we reported this
Three designated cycling paths opened this week in Paddington Bne, each built with wide shoulders and gentle grades that suit riders under ten years old and adults returning to bikes after long breaks.
Recent service disruptions across mobile networks left many households looking for activities that do not rely on apps or constant connectivity, pushing local families toward outdoor options close to home. Council records show foot and bike traffic at entry points to Paddington Memorial Park rose 28 percent in the first week of July compared with the same period last year.
The longest new route runs two kilometres along Given Terrace from the Caxton Street roundabout to the western gate of Paddington Memorial Park, where riders share a sealed path separated from cars by raised concrete barriers installed in late 2025. A shorter loop circles the reservoir at Ithaca Creek, maintained by the Paddington Wellness Initiative, which supplies free helmet checks every Saturday morning at the community shed on Latrobe Terrace.
Flat terrain and clear signage
Both paths stay under a three percent gradient and carry painted centre lines that keep faster riders on one side. The Paddington Cycling Collective, a volunteer group based at the Rosalie Community Hall, added reflective arrows and distance markers last month so beginners can track progress without phones. A third spur connects the park to the playground at Victoria Park via a short stretch of Fernberg Road closed to through traffic on weekends.
Low-cost entry and scheduled support
Helmet and bike hire at the Paddington Memorial Park kiosk costs twelve dollars for two hours, with the option to extend at six dollars per additional hour. A June 2026 council survey counted 1,140 family groups using the Given Terrace path on weekends, up from 870 the previous summer. Sessions run by the Paddington Wellness Initiative begin at 9 a.m. on the first and third Sundays of each month, covering basic gear checks and simple route navigation.
Residents can pick up printed maps at the Paddington Library branch on Latrobe Terrace or join the next group ride on 12 July, which starts at the Caxton Street roundabout and ends with a picnic at the park rotunda.
