Fortitude Valley Opens Safe Cycling Routes for Families and Beginners
New marked paths through local green spaces give families and first-time riders options away from main traffic.
How we reported this

Fortitude Valley marked three new family cycling loops on 1 July 2026 that keep riders on separated paths through Bowen Park and the Ann Street green corridor.
Parents and children have asked for routes that avoid the speed and volume of traffic on Brunswick Street and Wickham Terrace. The timing lines up with the Valley Wellness Initiative push to increase outdoor activity before the cooler months set in.
Paths that stay off busy roads
The first loop starts at the Bowen Park entrance on Gregory Street and follows a 1.8-kilometre sealed track around the oval and pond before returning via the same gate. A second route uses the newly painted lane that runs parallel to Ann Street between James Street and the Fortitude Valley Community Centre, covering 2.4 kilometres with two rest stops equipped with bike racks. Both paths link to the Bike Hub program run by the Valley Community Centre, which offers free helmet checks on Saturday mornings.
Valley Cycle Collective recorded 1,240 family rides on its tracked routes in the first six months of 2026, up from 890 rides during the same period last year. Daily bike rentals at the Community Centre cost $12 for adults and $8 for children under 12, with bookings available through the centre’s front desk.
Getting started this weekend
Riders can pick up a printed map at the Fortitude Valley Library on Sunday or download the route files from the Valley Wellness Initiative site. Beginners are advised to start on the shorter Bowen Park loop before trying the Ann Street section during daylight hours. The Community Centre runs a 30-minute skills session every Saturday at 9 a.m. for any family that wants a quick refresher on gears and braking before heading out.
